How ChatDrift.Fun keeps video chats safe

Random video chat can be safe when the site is built for it and you know the risks. Here is exactly what ChatDrift.Fun does, what it can’t do, and what you can do.

Is it safe to video chat with strangers?

It can be, with the right site and a few habits. The risks are real: people who expose themselves, scams and blackmail (often called sextortion), people trying to work out who you are, and minors who shouldn’t be there at all. A site built for safety makes each of those hard. The habits below do the rest.

No site can promise that nothing bad will ever happen, and this one doesn’t. What it can promise is what it does, every time, and that is what this page describes.

What the other person can and can’t see

In every chat on ChatDrift.Fun
They get They never get
Your video and your sound Your IP address
What you type in the chat Your location, from the connection
Your Angel vs. Devil badge, only at either end of the scale Your name or any account (there are no accounts)
Whatever your camera shows behind you Who rated you, or how

How your IP address stays hidden

In an ordinary video call the two browsers connect straight to each other, and to do that each one is told the other’s internet (IP) address. That address can reveal your city and your internet provider, and on many random chat sites the person you meet can read it with a browser add-on.

On ChatDrift.Fun every call goes through a relay service in the middle instead. Each browser only ever talks to the relay, so the person you meet never receives your address, and yours is removed from anything that could carry it. Video and sound are encrypted from one browser to the other, so the relay carries them without being able to see or hear the call. The relay does see your IP address, which it needs to carry the call.

Your camera can still give you away: a view from a window, a letter with your address, a work badge, a photo on the wall. Look at what’s behind you before you start.

Who moderates, and how

  • Real people. ChatDrift.Fun is moderated by people. There is no automated scanning of video.
  • They can look in. To keep people safe, a moderator can watch your camera, listen to your microphone and see your chat messages while you are online, and sees your IP address and browser type. Everyone agrees to this before their first chat.
  • Every look is logged, so another moderator can check who looked at what, and when.
  • They can act at once: end a chat, disconnect someone, or block a connection for a time or for good.
  • Nothing is recorded. ChatDrift.Fun doesn’t record or store video or sound, and a moderator’s view is live, not saved.

Report works even after the chat ends

The most common trick on random video chat is to show something and skip before anyone can react. So Report works during a chat and for a minute after it ends, and still reaches the person you just talked to.

  • Press Report (the flag), choose a reason, and add a note if you like. Sending it ends the chat, and the recent messages are kept with the report for a moderator.
  • While you write, their video is hidden and their sound is muted.
  • After a report you won’t be paired with that person again right away, even if they reload the page.
  • When several different people report the same connection, it is blocked automatically for a while, before a moderator even looks.
  • Reports about minors, sexual exploitation, threats or someone in danger are handled first.

The rules everyone agrees to

  • Adults only. ChatDrift.Fun doesn’t check ID: everyone confirms they are 18 or older, and anyone found to be younger is removed.
  • No nudity, sexual content, harassment or hate.
  • Both cameras on. Camera and microphone stay on for the whole chat. There is no mute and no camera-off, so nobody can watch without being seen.
  • The community moderates too. In Angel vs. Devil people rate each other privately, and enough Devil picks from different people pause someone’s chatting for an hour. How community moderation works.

The full rules, and everything the site keeps, are in the Community Guidelines.

Your part: seven habits

  1. Keep personal details to yourself: your full name, address, school, workplace, phone number and social accounts.
  2. Check your background before you press Start.
  3. Stay here. Someone who wants to move to another app straight away is a common start of scams and blackmail.
  4. Never send money, gift cards or crypto to someone you met in a chat, whatever the story.
  5. Assume the other screen can record. Don’t show anything you wouldn’t want kept.
  6. Leave without explaining. If it feels wrong, press Next or Stop, then report it. You don’t owe anyone a reason.
  7. Be wary of faces that look too perfect or move strangely: face filters and deepfakes exist, and a video isn’t proof of who someone is.

If someone threatens you

If someone says they recorded you and demands money or more images, don’t pay and don’t reply. Paying rarely ends it. Keep screenshots of what they sent and any usernames, report them, and contact your local police.

  • Adults can use StopNCII.org to help stop intimate images being shared on major platforms.
  • If you are under 18, you shouldn’t be on ChatDrift.Fun, and Take It Down can help remove images of you taken before you turned 18.

Your privacy, in short

  • No account and no sign-up: there is nothing to fill in.
  • No cookies, and nothing loaded from other companies. The Cookie Policy lists the few settings kept in your browser.
  • Chat messages are held only for your current chat, unless it is reported. The Community Guidelines list everything that is kept, and for how long.

Questions people ask

Can someone find my location through random video chat?

Not from the connection on ChatDrift.Fun: calls go through a relay, so nobody receives your IP address. They can only learn what your camera shows or what you tell them.

Is ChatDrift.Fun safe for teenagers?

No. It is for adults only. Anyone found to be under 18 is removed, and reports about minors are handled first.

Does ChatDrift.Fun record my video?

No. Video and sound are never stored, and a moderator’s view is live, not saved. Only the recent messages of a reported chat are kept, with the report.

What happens after I report someone?

The chat ends, and a moderator reviews the report with the recent messages. You won’t be paired with that person again right away. Several reports from different people block them automatically for a while.

Can I video chat without my camera?

No. Both people’s camera and microphone stay on for the whole chat, so nobody can watch others without being seen.

Is random video chat anonymous?

Private, not anonymous. There’s no account and the other person never gets your IP address, but they see your face, and the site sees your IP address to apply its rules.
