ChatDrift.Fun at a glance

From opening the page to your first chat

1. Agree once. Check the box to confirm you are 18 or older and agree to the Community Guidelines and the Cookie Policy.
2. Allow your camera and microphone. The browser asks only after you press Allow. If something goes wrong, the page shows the steps for your browser, and there is a full troubleshooting guide.
3. Check yourself in the waiting room. You see your own camera before anyone else does. Press Start when you’re ready.
4. Meet one person. The site pairs you with whoever else is waiting. If the video connection doesn’t come up within 3 seconds, it moves on to someone new by itself.
5. Talk, or type. The text chat is cleared when the chat ends, so the next person never sees it.
6. Next or Stop, any time. Next finds someone new. Stop takes you back to the waiting room. You don’t owe anyone a reason. After a Next, you won’t meet the same person again for a few seconds.

Private calls: your IP address stays yours

In most video calls the two browsers connect directly, and each is given the other’s IP address, which can reveal a city and an internet provider. On ChatDrift.Fun every call goes through a relay service instead. Each browser only talks to the relay, so the person you meet never receives your address.

Video and sound are encrypted from one browser to the other, so the relay carries them without seeing or hearing the call. The site’s server only introduces the two browsers, and the call itself never passes through it. The relay does see your IP address, which it needs to carry the call.

Angel vs. Devil: community-driven moderation

Angel vs. Devil is community-driven moderation: the people you meet help keep the site kind. It is always on, and nobody ever sees who picked what.

• Two buttons. A couple of seconds into a chat, Angel? and Devil? appear on the other person’s video. Pick one, or neither. A pick is final and private.
• Your status. The picks other people make about you move you along a scale of eight steps, from Maximum Angel to Maximum Devil. The waiting room shows your own status after a chat.
• Badges. Only the ends of the scale are shown to the people you meet: Maximum Angel and Strong Angel, Strong Devil and Super Devil. Everything in between stays private.
• Maximum Devil pauses chatting for an hour. Then the position starts again at Neutral (at Devil for a second pause within a day), and the people you meet aren’t told.
• Hard to game. A pick counts only for a chat that connected and lasted 20 seconds; one person’s pick about another counts once a day, their Devil picks at most ten times an hour; a pause from picks always takes Devil picks from several different people; and positions drift back toward Neutral every hour without picks. The site’s owner can also add votes by hand, as the Community Guidelines explain.

Moderation and Report

• Moderators are people. There is no automated scanning of video. A moderator can watch a camera, listen to a microphone and see chat messages live, and every look is logged. Everyone agrees to this before their first chat.
• Report works for a minute after a chat ends, so someone who shows something and skips can still be reported. The recent messages are kept with the report.
• Reports add up. When several different people report the same connection, it is blocked for a while automatically. You won’t be paired with someone you reported again right away.

What ChatDrift.Fun keeps

• No video and no sound, ever.
• Chat messages only for the chat you are in, unless it is reported: then the recent messages are kept with the report for a limited time.
• Reports and bans, for the times the guidelines list.
• A few settings in your own browser, such as light or dark mode.

What ChatDrift.Fun isn’t

• Not a dating site, and not a place for sexual content: nudity gets people removed.
• Not for anyone under 18. There is no ID check, and anyone found to be younger is removed.
